GSM Guide: Choosing the Right Fabric Weight for Women’s Knitwear

GSM — grams per square metre — is the fastest way to describe how a knit will behave. It is also the number most often quoted loosely, which is why two fabrics described as “240 GSM” can feel completely different.

What each weight range does

  • 130–180 GSM — lightweight jersey and slub knits. Sheer to semi-sheer, excellent drape. T-shirts, blouses, summer dresses, layering pieces.
  • 180–240 GSM — the everyday middle. Rib tops, fitted dresses, light sweatshirting. Holds shape without being heavy.
  • 240–300 GSM — structured knits: waffle, interlock, heavy rib. Sweatshirts, cardigans, wide-leg trousers, autumn dresses.
  • 300 GSM and above — outerwear weights. Chunky rib, brushed back fleece, heavy lurex. Coats, winter dresses, statement separates.

Why the same GSM can feel different

  • Yarn count — a fine yarn packed tightly feels denser than a thick yarn knitted loosely, at the same GSM.
  • Knit structure — a 1×1 rib stretches to 165 cm from a much narrower greige width than a plain jersey, which changes the hand.
  • Finish — brushing, peaching and compacting all move the GSM slightly and change the surface.

Write a tolerance into the spec

Ask for GSM to be measured after the finished wash, and specify a tolerance — ±5% is normal, ±3% for premium programmes. Then state the test method so both sides are measuring the same way.

A quick reference for our own range

Most articles are knitted at our standard 165 cm usable width, and each product page lists the exact width of that quality, so weight and width stay consistent from swatch to bulk.
