Metallic knitwear never fully leaves the range, but the way it is bought changes every few seasons. For autumn/winter 2026-27 the direction is clear: less sparkle, more sheen.
What is shifting
- Finer gauges — lurex used to arrive as a chunky party knit. Buyers are now asking for 26–32 gauge fabrics that can be cut as a dress or a slim-fit top.
- Tonal metallics — silver on grey, champagne on ivory, bronze on brown. The shine should read as part of the colour, not sit on top of it.
- Brushed finishes — a light brush softens the metallic and makes the fabric feel more premium in the hand.
The technical problem nobody mentions
Metallic yarn is brittle. Knitted at the wrong tension it snags on the needle, and the finished fabric can develop a “grin” — small holes that only appear after the garment is washed. Two things prevent it: the right tension on the machine, and a 4-point inspection on every roll before it is packed.
Ask your mill two questions: which machine the article was knitted on, and what the snag rating is after three washes. A mill that cannot answer the second one has not tested it.
How to buy it well
- Request a full hanger, not just a swatch card — lurex has to be seen draping.
- Test under both studio and warm store lighting; the same yarn can look grey or gold depending on the source.
- Confirm the metallic percentage. 2–5% carries a subtle sheen; above 8% starts to feel like party wear.
- Ask about lining. Fine lurex knits can be slightly translucent over a frame.
